shipwrecked

The island of Brännö

The Island of Brännö is just off the coast of Gothenburg, you can catch a ferry every hour from Saltholmen. When we arrived the sea is so covered in fog that we can barely make out that the island even exists (which actually made the ferry trip over like a haunted ghost ride). The ferry leaves and I automatically was confused what we had been dropped off on, it turns out the only car on the island is the taxi that picks up strays coming off the ferry and the only road is a dirt track that leads from one end of the island to the other... no getting lost for me. It is like the island time forgot. The people are friendly but sparse and they all drive round on bikes with big baskets on the front, each postbox is hand decorated and some houses are even built into the rocky outcrops.

As we walked we found the town center: consisting of a post office, a cafe and what looked like a small shop with picnic benches outside. Apparently the island comes more alive in the summer, and considering the island is surrounded by shallow water and hidden beaches, I can see why. The cafe was particular cute. With heart shaped pastries and people coming in and out of the cottage like wooden doors, this certainly is the heart of the island. The cafe was full of pictures of a man called Lasse Dahlquist who was a famous Swedish country song artist. After a lot of detective work we figured out that the cafe hosts regular music nights and there is even a Lasse Dahlquist scholarship that aims to award other Swedish artists. The photos on the wall show the history of a man who obviously had such an impact on a very small island.

Then we found a small field of sheep and a cat followed me down the road and you suddenly feel like you have got back home.

Maybe everyone would be happily shipwrecked there.
